Hi Hal

Traced down the double -g -O2 to a bug in the autoconf core.
According to
http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#Flag-Variables-Ordering
CFLAGS should never be modified by the configure. The intent is that
this variable should allow the user to override any decision made by
the automatic configure flows. 

The bug is that a test made by the core is actually modifying the variable.

I tested the patch on :
2.6.12.3-smp SuSE Linux 9.3 (i586)
