hi roland,  here are some cleanup patches and
a bugfix for 2.6.25.  the bugfix might be 2.6.24
material, though we don't see it in anything but
synthetic tests -- i'll let you decide.

should fix the issue that andrew morton found:

Re: bitops are only defined on unsigned longs...

as it deletes that line...
