Using mailman it is also possible to hold rejected mail for moderation, 
which allows you to catch people who might be sending legit mail from 
outside.  Kinda gives you the best of both worlds.  The drawback is that 
someone needs to moderate it...

Also, you have the option of rejecting or dropping the messages. 
Rejecting sends a response, at the risk of causing backscatter spam. 
But at least then if someone legit who is not a list member posts to the 
list, it'll send them a message back telling them they need to join the 
list.
