Proposal for 2009 OFA Workshop Presentation

Interconnects and Software for Real-Time Embedded Systems
Ken Cain
Abstract
Important characteristics of a class of real-time embedded high performance
computing (RTEHPC) systems will be discussed, along with anticipated
challenges for OFED in these environments. RTEHPC systems are used to
capture streams of data from sensors (e.g., RADAR), and transform the
data into information in real-time using digital signal processing
algorithms and high performance computing. These systems are deployed
in size, weight, and power constrained environments, and are often
incorporated into a broader network of systems. Topics discussed in this
presentation will include the following:
* The RapidIO interconnect used in many RTEHPC systems, with qualitative
and quantitative comparisons to InfiniBand and 10GbE/iWARP interconnects
* Importance of low latency, predictability and algorithm/processing
efficiency
* IPC "host offload vs. onload" in this context
* Networking protocol and API interoperability
* Interconnect trends and impact on future embedded systems
* Middleware design and mapping to interconnect hardware, including some
examples developed for RTEHPC environments.
* Particular aspects of OFED design/implementation in this context
