I had actually tried it both ways.  It fails in either case.

You are exactly correct.

Here is the message:

    rds: bind failed; 10.1.1.13 not a valid IPoIB interface address!

And yet the IPoIB interface is working well.  I tried a variety of IPoIB
tests between the nodes and they work.  I can even ssh to the other machine
using the IPoIB interface.
