FWIW: I saw this behavior on kernel-smp-2.6.16-1.2096_FC4.root (i.e. an 
FC4 machine.)  That's a regular 2.6.16-1.2096_FC4 RPM that we twiddled 
slightly and rebuilt (I don't have the twiddlage details to hand.)
