If this is a check to make sure my changes didn't break anything, shouldn't this be the name of my
git tree and my branch instead of ofed_kernel.git ?

No, I was referring to the name of the new GIT tree for the driver code.
I will name it qlgc_vnic.git to avoid confusion.
