Did you happen to see the following message (I_MPI_DEBUG=50) before 
failover to sockets?

I_MPI: [0] I_MPI_dat_ia_openv_wrap(): DAPL version compatibility 
requirement check failed; required DAPL 1.2, provided DAPL 2.0
