The issue has been resolved. The OFED-4.8 installation of compat-rdma has a dependency on the objtool. The installation fails (with modules can't be built message) without indicating the missing objtool and only after inspecting the compat/configure and compat/config.log file, the issue can be traced to objtool not found. 

FYI: My fix is the following:

#cd path_to_kernel_build_dir/linux-4.8/tools/objtool
#make

Maybe a better warning about missing objtool would be helpful.

We've completed testing for OFED-4.8-rc4.
