The udev rules are not part of the kernel ABI.  udev and indeed all dev/ naming
issues are pure userspace and as such are totally out of the kernel's control.

Eventually a standard location for umad* devices may emerge but for now I
think making any programs that use the device nodes as flexible as possible
is probably a good idea.
