The best time to crank the major version is at the beginning, there
are few users, no proprietary binary stuff, no distros to contend
with. Better to take the hit then live with bodges forever..
Especially if you are not 100% confident in the API at this point ...
IMHO, freezing the binary ABI too early in a project is very
toxic.
