Pasha presented the UCX - the Unified Communication - X Framework project
UCX is based on a collaboration between industry, laboratories, and academia to create an open source production grade communication framework for data centric and HPC applications.
The UCX project is based on the following contributions:
- Mellanox co-designs network interface and contributed the MXM technology
- Infrastructure, UD, RC, DCT, shared memory, protocols, integration with OpenMPI/SHMEM, MPICH
- ORNL co-designs network contributed the UCCS project
- IB optimizations, Cray devices, shared memory
- NVIDIA co-designs high-quality support for GPU devices
- GPU-Direct, GDR copy, etc.
- IBM co-designs network interface and contributed ideas and concepts from PAMI
- UH/UTK focus on integration with their research platforms
UCX will be integrated with major MPI distributions, OpenSHMEM, PGAS languages, etc.
Woody asked if UCX can be part of OFA software distribution. In the past OFA software included MPI from OSU and OpenMPI therefore similar things were done in the past. UCX license is BSD based, similar to the MPI licenses. As OFA permits BSD only stack it may be part of OFED distribution in the future.
Regarding the licensing, in a follow-up email Jim Ryan mentioned that "Please elaborate upon the licensing provisions on the last page of the presentation you sent out. I'm not sure I fully understand all this, but I want to remark, in passing, this is counter to the licensing requirements of the OFA". UCX is a separate project today so there is no issue. If there will be a desire to bring it into OFA, a discussion will need to be done on the OFA licensing scheme - licensing of user land code.
There was a discussion on tools. Pasha has started a bi-weekly meeting to discuss need from tools. One of the previous OFV meeting was dedicated to tools as this is part of the OFV mission. Due to the expected effort around tools, Liran and Pasha suggested to create a sub-group under OFA to be dedicated to tools. The sub group meetings will be on every other Thu. The group confirmed the nomination of Alex Netes to be the chair of the OFV-Tools sub group.
