I have seen those same errors with ibping and I suspect there may be a bug with the -G option.
Also, that is a client/server tool, so you need to start "ibping -S" on one node, then "ibping ###" from another node.
If you use the lid, it works perfectly -- ibstat will give you the lid. ( called Base lid in ibstat-speak )
Like so:
[root at mu0001 ~]# ibstat
CA 'mlx4_0'
CA type: MT26428
Number of ports: 1
Firmware version: 2.9.1000
Hardware version: b0
Node GUID: 0x002590ffff1678d8
System image GUID: 0x002590ffff1678db
Port 1:
State: Active
Physical state: LinkUp
Rate: 40
Base lid: 366
LMC: 0
SM lid: 250
Capability mask: 0x02510868
Port GUID: 0x002590ffff1678d9
Link layer: InfiniBand
[root at mu0001 ~]# ibping -S &
[1] 22448
[root at mu0001 ~]# exit
logout
Connection to mu0001 closed.
[root at mu-master ~]# ssh mu0002
[root at mu0002 ~]# ibping 366
Pong from mu0001.localdomain.(none) (Lid 366): time 0.230 ms
Pong from mu0001.localdomain.(none) (Lid 366): time 0.092 ms
Pong from mu0001.localdomain.(none) (Lid 366): time 0.114 ms
