Agreed. 

Once stuff is shipped and installed by the distros, it may be
easier to have different components mature at different rates. 
 
I still however think that openIB will want to periodically test a set of
components together and call that set of components (RPMs or tar balls) a
release. 1.0, 2.0, etc. 
At least people would then know that a specific set of components 
RPMs have all been tested and work together.
