Hrm, sounds like you are describing gcc ;)

Kidding aside, most distributions package a whole slew of versions for
this very reason.  On my Fedora 3 system, I have automake 1.4, 1.5, 1.6,
1.7 and 1.9; autoconf 2.13 and 2.59.
